· Course Outline
The course will consist of wide ranging subjects concerning the study and reconstruction (by means of a historical and above all archaeological and artistic approach) of the political, socio-economic and cultural life of the millenary Byzantine Empire (from 330-1453 A.D). The course will be based on a historical and above all, an archaeological and artistic approach (with particular reference to various written sources such as documentary, epigraphic, hagiographic). Moreover, the subject is of great relevance within a local context, with regard to the "Terra d'Otranto". This was a province of the Byzantine Empire (from the end of the 9th Century until the end of the 11th Century) where archaeological and artistic heritage continued to thrive, even after Byzantine rule, due to close relations with Byzantium and other areas within the Empire, above all Greece.

· Further Activities
Cataloguing of all artistic finds from late antiquity and the Byzantine age present in the area.
A survey of the land around the Gulf of Mandalya in Caria (Asia Minor) in conjunction with the Italian Archaeological Mission, involving the participation of several universities.
